Licence

To carry out plumbing work in Québec, you must hold the appropriate contractor or owner-builder's licence from the RBQ, including in particular the licence subclass 15.5, Contractor - plumbing.

Mandatary of the RBQ

The Corporation des maîtres mécaniciens en tuyauterie du Québec (CMMTQ) acts as a mandatary for the RBQ, ensuring the professional qualifications of plumbing and heating contractors and issuing a contractor's licence authorizing work in that field. Within this framework, the CMMTQ has the power to make a decision on any application for issue of a licence in plumbing and heating or a change to such licence, as well as to prepare and administer qualification examinations and other means of assessment.

Responsibility of a building owner or manager

As the owner or manager of a building, you must make sure you give your plumbing work to be done only to licensed contractors. If the vehicle of the contractor you hire displays the CMMTQ logo, rest assured that the person holds the appropriate licence.

All piping is not plumbing

A drain pipe (subsoil drain) may be a pipe, but its installation is not plumbing work. Just as a hot water heating system and an irigation system are not plumbing but piping. A plumbing contractor is specifically concerned with work on water supply systems, waste water evacuation and the ventilation of sanitation facilities.
