Adding a class or a subclass

To add a class or subclass to your licence, you need to submit an application to modify your licence to the Régie du bâtiment du Québec (RBQ). You must complete a licence application form and check the box indicating that you are requesting a modification. You will have to pay any applicable fees or charges. For current fees, go to Fee structure and fines.

Do I need to write more examinations?

To add one or more subclasses from Schedules I and II, you will need to write the examinations in the Carrying out of Construction Work field for those subclasses. To add one or more subclasses from Schedule III, you are not required to write an examination unless you hold only subclasses from 1.4 to 1.7. In that case, you will need to write the examinations in safety and in project and site management for the subclasses you want to add.

Plumbing and electrical (subclasses 15.1, 15.2, 15.3, 15.4, 15.5 and 16)

If you want to modify your licence to include subclasses 15.1, 15.2, 15.3, 15.4 or 15.5, please contact the Corporation des maîtres mécaniciens en tuyauterie du Québec This link leaves the Régie du bâtiment du Québec’s Website.. If you want to modify your licence to include subclass 16, please contact the Corporation des maîtres électriciens du Québec This link leaves the Régie du bâtiment du Québec’s Website..

What is the processing time for adding a subclass?

If your application to modify your licence is complete and meets all requirements, the RBQ will process it within 60 days of when it is received. If your application is incomplete or does not meet all the requirements, a written notice will be sent to you within 15 days of when your application is received, to request that you provide the missing information or documents. Failure to receive the information and documents before the deadline allows the RBQ to keep the processing fees of your application. However, you will be reimbursed for the fees you paid to get a licence. At this point, you will have to fill a new application to obtain a licence and pay the processing fees again.

Interprovincial agreements

Different processing times apply for licence modifications for companies that come under an interprovincial agreement. To see what they are, go to Interprovincial agreements.
