11.2 Contractor – Special equipment and products

This subclass authorizes construction work that is not the exclusive domain of master pipe mechanics and electrical contractors and involves all types of special equipment and products that are not governed by a subclass covered in Schedule II or this schedule, as well as similar or related construction work.  

Additional explanations

This subclass authorizes, without exceeding the regulatory framework, construction work relating to:

  • the installation of central vacuum systems
  • equipment used in sports centres, stadiums, gymnasiums or similar premises (basketball hoops, ropes, wall bards and other climbing accessories, clocks, bowling alleys, the erection and anchoring of playground equipment and furnishings in public parks   
  • climbing walls
  • partition curtains in gymnasiums, among others
  • library equipment
  • medical equipment
  • stage and theatre equipment (ex.: theatre curtains) and controls
  • automatic dispensers such as coin changers, ticket dispensers, etc.   
  • parking lot equipment such as the gatehouse, gates, ticket dispensers, etc. 
  • loading dock equipment (platforms, wall-mounted doorstops, dock sealing pads
  • waste handling equipment
  • food service equipment
  • fixed or retractable plastic, aluminum, fibreglass or metal awnings (frame erection and securing to the building)
  • all types of anchoring work (bike stands, industrial equipment, conveyors, scaffolding, etc.)
  • sign supports
  • service station equipment (pipes and tanks requiring subclass 1.8)
  • generating units, stationary generators (except the electrical connection, which requires subclass 16.0)
  • mechanical installation of bowling lanes
  • travelling cranes integrated in civil engineering works such as power plants, incinerators, water treatment plants, etc.  
  • permanent building signs (ex.: exit signs required by the Construction Code) or on civil engineering works (ex.: road signs, pavement lines, billboards), the anchoring of signs on a construction site, work on sign supports and other similar or related construction work   
  • detection loops in pavement
  • systems for the transportation of documents    
  • seating in theatres and movie houses, sports centres, etc. 

NO LICENCE IS REQUIRED FOR THE FOLLOWING:

  • the installation and placement of an awning’s canvas
  • the erection and assembly of playground equipment on a freestanding base  
  • the installation of decorative shelves, small mirrors and bathroom accessories (soap dishes, towel racks, mirrors), vertical and horizontal blinds, drapes, curtains, venetian blinds 
  • screen repairs
  • the construction of a travelling crane or transportation system that is not part of a building’s equipment, except for anchoring work. However, construction work related to the installation of the crane that affects the structure of the building constitutes construction work for which a construction contractor’s licence is required (ex.: strengthening a building’s frame, construction of concrete bases, raising a roof, welding components to a building’s structure) 
  • construction of signs along roads and highways, except when the sign is located in the road or highway’s right of way  
  • a mobile sign on a trailer plugged into an outlet
  • work relating to the application of flexible lettering (ex.: vinyl) directly on a shop window
