14.1 Contractor – Passenger and freight elevators

This subclass authorizes construction work that is not the exclusive domain of electrical contractors and relates to elevators, freight elevators, dumbwaiters, escalators, moving walks, and material lifts governed by the current edition of CAN/CSA B44 “Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators” applicable under Chapter IV of the Construction Code (chapter B-1.1, r.2) and defined in said code, as well a related construction work.    

Additional explanations

This subclass authorizes, without exceeding the regulatory framework, construction work relating to:

  • hoisting and lowering mechanisms with cab or platform that moves between two or more landings. This material includes passenger and freight elevators   
  • motorized stairs and walkways that carry passengers from one level to another. This material includes escalators and moving walks.  
  • hoisting and lowering mechanisms with cab used for the exclusive transportation of materials because of their smaller size or hard-to-access cab. This material includes dumbwaiters and material lifts   
  • passenger elevators governed by the CSA-B311 standard as well as other types of material-lifts governed by the ASME-B20.1 standards, subject to acceptance of a different measure by the Régie du bâtiment du Québec under article 127 of the Building Act (CQLR, c. B-1.1).
