Looking for the standards for home construction and renovation work, like replacing a roof, repairing a chimney, changing doors and windows, building a patio or modifying the height of a banister?
You should know that while the Régie du bâtiment du Québec is responsible for the Building chapter of the Construction Code, each municipality sets the regulations that apply on its territory.
Municipalities are responsible for the regulations for residential buildings (single-family dwellings, duplexes, triplexes and small residential buildings).
Since municipalities can adopt the version of the Building chapter of the Construction Code that is most suited to their reality, standards may differ from one jurisdiction to the next. Consult your municipality. Only they can tell you the applicable version of the code for your building.
Then, you may consult the exact version of the code that applies to your building on the National Research Council of Canada website.
If you own another type of building, consult the If you do the work on your buildings, equipment or facilities webpage.
A licence is required for certain types of work. For details on the situations where you must hire a licenced contractor, consult the If you do the work by yourself webpage.
We recommend always checking if your contractor holds a valid licence using the Check a contractor’s licence webpage.
Régie du bâtiment du Québec regulations apply to all public use buildings. They are intended for construction professionals, i.e. contractors, owner-builders, owners and operators and designers.
