Receiving the visit of inspectors

Whether it is carried out by you or by a contractor, your work is liable to be verified by municipal inspectors. If your work involves plumbing, gas, petroleum equipment or an electrical installation, it may also be verified by inspectors from the Régie du bâtiment du Québec (RBQ). The purpose of the inspection is to verify the quality and safety of the installations or buildings subject to the work.

Whether you build or renovate

A municipal or provincial inspector may visit at any time the building or renovating site to verify the following:
  • If a building or renovation permit has been delivered by your municipality.
  • If the work is performed as per the standards.
  • If the work is carried out by persons who hold the appropriate licences and permits.

For a new residential building

Before taking delivery of your house or condominium unit, i.e. to accept it, you must proceed to its inspection. You will thus be able to protect your rights, and this shall mark the beginning of certain guarantees provided for under the Guarantee plan for new residential buildingsThis link open an external website of the Régie du bâtiment du Québec in a new window..
